Girl of the Moon
By Tim Becker
A Story of the Consciousness of (3) Children debates the value of interference with a little owl while on the moon, recounting each of the lives she avoids, arguing that they are better off without her.
An Excerpt:
“I am not the keeper of the outcome, simply an instigator of truths, potential or otherwise, large or small, well defined or still pre-formed, floating in the primordial ooze. But here you stand, shedding responsibility as a snake sheds its skin. You blame my words as the hands that bound you to your course. Then so be it! I will take responsibility for your failures and your success. They will be mine and I will celebrate, and you will call me clever, and I will call me proud.”
Girl of the Moon
There is a girl who lives on the moon. She is alone and all is quiet and still, except for the volume and violence inside her head. Guilt, shame, fear, keep her at a distance from life, and experience, from pain and hurt and happiness. On screens, the lives that could have been are played out, the fate of (3) children without the benefit of her, without soul or spirit, a hollow husk, automations dulled and protected from the extremes of emotion and experience, and destined for a life full of shades of gray and inevitable sorrow. This is her purgatory, forever watching, on repeat, the suffering of her other selves, knowing that her interference would change their lives, unsure if it would be for the better or the worse. She is unable to change under her own influence. In this her path is set. In this she is immortal.
